Reiki and Energy Medicine

Energy Medicine is based on the principle that the health of body, mind, and spirit are anchored in the body's energy systems. Health problems can be diminished, and often overcome, by intelligently shifting the energies that maintain them.

The "life force," often called "energy" in Western culture, is an entity that permeates and bonds all. It is sometimes referred to as the "vital force." In China, it is called Qi; in India it is called prana. It is believed the "life force" extends throughout the universe and that the individual is part of an indivisible whole. Most Eastern philosophies share this common theme of universal spirit and wholeness. Individuals who practice such alternative medical approaches as meditation, yoga or tai chi do so not only because it decreases stress and anxiety and promotes general well-being, but also because it helps them connect with the "life energy" within and around them.

Energy healing is based on the belief that our "life force" creates energy fields that are unbalanced during emotional or physical disease. Because our energy fields are part of an interconnected whole, the use of focused intention by one individual can aid in the health and well being of another. Many individuals use their own individual means of directing their intention to heal. Others practice according to schools such as Reiki.

Reiki is a technique used to reduce stress, encourage relaxation, promote healing and restore a sense of well being. It addresses all aspects of a person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual; and assists the body’s ability to heal itself.
The word reiki comes from the Japanese words rei, which means universal or highest and ki meaning subtle energy.  You’re probably well acquainted with your physical body. But what you may not know is that you also have an energy body fueled by a wonderful, subtle energy known as universal life energy. This universal life energy flows within you and around you. A Reiki practitioner works with your energy body to help bring it into balance.

What happens in a Reiki session?
A session is most often done in a quiet room with relaxing music. The client lies on a treatment table, fully clothed and covered with a light blanket. The practitioner places her hands on or slightly above the person in specific areas. A full session takes an hour or so.  Reiki relieves pain, slows respiration, and lowers blood pressure. It helps calm and relax the person receiving it and is believed to balance a person’s energy. It supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

A Reiki practitioner does not diagnose, prescribe or treat in a medical way. Since there are no contraindications, Reiki can be used with traditional Western medicine. In fact, it is used in some hospitals and hospice settings, as well as by professionals such as massage therapists, occupational and rehab therapists, by those in ministry and in private practice.

Energy Medicine therapies are not generally covered by your health insurance.
